COVID-19: UNDP and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria donate a Computed Tomography to the National Infectious Disease Hospital

July 28, 2021

Today, July 28th, 2021, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria donated a Computed Tomography device to the National Infectious Disease Hospital. This technology helps establish precise and early diagnosis for many diseases, and, in this particular moment, is of utmost importance to support timely diagnostics of COVID-19 related complications. This is one of the very few Computed Tomography devices in the public health care system in Kyrgyzstan.

The device was purchased by the UNDP under the Global Fund “Effective HIV and TB control project in Kyrgyzstan”, for a total of 407,247.72 USD. The National Infectious Disease Hospital, which entirely renovated a room for the CT at its own expense, has been at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19.

The Computed Tomography was installed by an international expert and is already operational. In addition to COVID-19 related diagnostics, this device will be used to provide free CT scans for tuberculosis patients, people living with HIV and key population groups under UNDP’s “Effective HIV and TB Control” project. CT scans are in particular useful for timely diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis in children.

“UNDP is strongly committed to making every life count, and this donation, once again, illustrates our constant and fruitful cooperation with the Ministry of Health and Development of the Kyrgyz Republic. We hope that in these times of global pandemic, this donation will further support health care workers to establish timely, precise diagnosis, avoid serious complications and, as such, save more lives,” said Inga Babicheva, coordinator of UNDP’s “Effective HIV and TB Control” project, during the transfer ceremony.

UNDP has been implementing the Global Fund grants since 2011, actively supporting the Kyrgyz Republic’s HIV and TB control programs in providing quality prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care. Additional funds have been allocated to counter the COVID-19 pandemic and help the health care system withstand.
