A joint proposal prepared by the UNDP Kyrgyzstan in cooperation with the national partners has been approved by the Green Climate Secretariat with the funding amount of 2,6 mln USD. The goal is to develop National Adaptation Plan and to reduce vulnerability and build resilience to climate change by integrating adaptation across sectors and levels of government. The key executive agencies of the project are Coordination Council for Green Economy and Climate Change, Ministry of Economy of KR, Center for Climate Finance, State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry, Ministry of Emergency Situations and Hydrometeorological Agency , Ministry of Health of KR, Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation of KR, as well as state regional administrations of Osh, Jalalabad and Batken oblasts.

UNDP in the Kyrgyz Republic and the national partners prepared NAP funding proposal submitted by National Designated Authority to GCF Secretariat in the end of 2019.  Green Climate Fund Secretariat approved the Readiness Proposal for the Kyrgyz Republic on 16th May 2020 for the amount of USD 2,6 mln for advancing the development of a National Adaptation Plan (NAP) process for medium and long-term adaptation planning and implementation in the Kyrgyz Republic. The goal of reducing vulnerability and building resilience to climate change by integrating adaptation across sectors and levels of government. While the destructive impacts of climate change come in many manifestations, they do share one aspect – the resultant need to take preventative action. Recognizing this, during the past few years, adaptation has become recognized as equally important as mitigation activities reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Paris Agreement, which entered into force in November 2016, enshrined this equally weighted approach to climate change. It recognizes that even with efforts to keep global temperature rises well below 2 degrees Celsius, we already need to adapt to adverse climate impacts that are occurring already.

Adaptation to the adverse effects of climate change is a priority for Kyrgyzstan. Over the last decade, the Government of Kyrgyzstan has taken a number of concrete steps to ensure that our development pathway is resilient to climate change and inclusive of the most vulnerable women and men.

Through the collaboration with national partners, UNDP will work with a multidisciplinary team of experts who will provide with a strong foundation of knowledge and analysis to take the adaptation planning process forward. This is an exciting opportunity to consolidate the work that has already been done, moving us towards a fully developed NAP and laying the foundation for implementation.
