Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan – On November 12 United Nations Development Programme in Kyrgyzstan (UNDP) held the first of a series of coordination meetings with national and international partners. The meeting discussed the main results of its democratic governance projects in 2014 and plans for 2015.
UNDP presented the results for eight projects related to strengthening the capacity of government agencies, promoting good governance for social justice, transparency of the state budget, support of the Constitutional Chamber, promotion of the rule of law and others. Partners made their comments and suggestions in the course of a lively discussion of the results and plans for next year. They also shared their views on the issues of implementation of the projects, the fight against corruption, the rule of law, analysis of program results, and others.
"The Constitutional Chamber of the Kyrgyz Republic has achieved a great deal, with the support of UNDP. In particular, our new website helps to actually implement the principle of transparency, where citizens can track the work of the chamber. There is understanding of the importance of working with civil society and the media,"- said the Chairman of the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court Mukambet Kasymaliev.
Participants of the meeting also learned about UNDP’s Strategic Plan 2014-2017, which describes some new approaches UNDP will apply to work more effectively in a rapidly changing world.
"United Nations Development Programme at the corporate level implements reforms to optimize its programs and projects. Such adjustment should be carried out from time to time. This helps to evaluate the real results. In the course of the reform, it was decided to reduce costs and redeploy resources. This allows us to be more focused on the results of the programmes"said UNDP Resident Representative in Kyrgyzstan Alexander Avanessov commenting on the overall direction UNDP’s activities.
Representatives of the Kyrgyz Parliament, the Presidential Administration, Office of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, ministries and departments, other government agencies of the Kyrgyz Republic, civil and expert community, and international organizations attended the meeting.
During the course of the discussion, UNDP proposed to create an advisory board to engage representatives of civil society in monitoring UNDP’s activities.
UNDP helps Kyrgyzstan in carrying out institutional reforms and strengthening best governance practices to ensure that accountable and responsive local government systems, elected representatives, officials and communities are in place. The aim is to promote equitable and sustainable human development by making it an integral component of government plans and policies.
Next coordination meetings will focus on projects related to socio-economic development, environment and energy, peace and development, and disaster risk management.
