Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (November 5, 2014) – United Nations in Kyrgyzstan awarded winners of the short film contest "My Kyrgyzstan as I see it". The contest was announced as part of the celebration of the 69th Anniversary of the United Nations in order to turn public attention to pressing social issues in the country.

The ceremony took place with participation of the UN Assistant Secretary General, the Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS Cihan Sultanoglu who arrived in Kyrgyzstan with an official visit.

30 feature and documentary short films were submitted to the contest. The movies reflect on issues of poverty reduction, healthcare, education, environment, youth, protection and realization of human rights, gender equality, etc.

Jury panel consisting of renowned professionals in cinematography selected Alijan Nosirov’s film as the first prize winner. The second place was shared by two films: "Uya" (Nest) of Talant Mambetov and “Sary oy” of Adilet Karzhoev. Third place went to the documentary "Mekkege karay jol" (The road to Mekkah) by Asel Zhuraeva. "Keck" (Vengeance) by Tynchtyk Akimaliev and "Hokkey.kg" by Nurbek Bolotov took fourth and fifth prizes.

"As you might know, recently Kyrgyzstan went through post-2015 consultations that will help determine development agenda beyond 2015. And now, I'm glad that filmmakers also contributing to the process" Cihan Sultanoglu said in her congratulatory speech. She also expressed the hope that this contest will become an annual tradition in Kyrgyzstan.

As part of the festival, it is also planned to arrange screening of the award-winning films in the oblast centers of Kyrgyzstan.

"There is one famous saying that art changes the world. Therefore, we believe that through such activities we can bring positive change in Kyrgyzstan" said UN Resident Coordinator in Kyrgyzstan Alexander Avanessov during his closing speech.
