Storytelling for changeSep 23, 2014
BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - September 24-25 Bishkek will host a seminar titled "Storytelling and report-writing for change”. During the seminar, representatives of international organizations, NGOs and the media will discuss ways to present information, reports and data in the field of development through storytelling.
The seminar is part of UNDP’s Week of innovation action SHIFT. The main goal of the event is to search for innovative solutions and approaches to solving various problems in the field of development. As part of the SHIFT week UNDP will host events to discuss various topics ranging from the use of social media in monitoring development results to crowdfunding in China, Jordan, Egypt, Georgia, Belarus, Zimbabwe and other countries.
In Kyrgyzstan, the SHIFT event will focus on using stories to tell people about the changes, any acute problems or issues in the field of development. Participants will discuss the basics of storytelling, different avenues through which one can tell these stories. Due to high volumes of information, which carries less substantive content, the ability to create a story is becoming increasingly important, especially to promote new approaches to improve the socio-economic and sustainable development of the country. Stories should teach people to effectively convey meaningful information to the public.
The event will be led by Professor Susan Moeler from the University of Maryland, United States. She teaches courses on media and international affairs and is the director of "International Center for Media and the Public Agenda" at the university. Susan Moeler holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and is the author of several books devoted to the use of communications and media in politics, mobilizing people around specific issues, as well as war photography.
