Japan and Central Asia increase cooperation in disaster risk reduction

Koi-Tash, Kyrgyzstan – On September 18-19, 2014, heads and representatives of emergency and foreign affairs bodies of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Japan will convene in Bishkek for the second Regional Ministerial Conference of Disaster Management Authorities of Central Asian Countries under the “Central Asia plus Japan” dialogue.

The participants of the Conference will discuss issues of high level platform/dialogue of Central Asian emergency agencies in the field of disaster risk reduction within “Central Asia plus Japan” dialogue. This platform will enhance future development and strengthening cooperation between Central Asian countries and the Government of Japan in disaster risk management considering Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015.

The Second Regional Ministerial Conference is a continuation of the First Regional Ministerial Conference “Regional Cooperation in the area of Disaster Risk Reduction  in Central Asia” (October 16-18, 2013, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan) and “Central Asia plus Japan” Dialogue.  Japan can share a unique experience in the field of disaster risk reduction.

The conference is organized by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyz Republic with support of UNDP Project “Strengthening disaster response and risk assessment capacities in the Kyrgyz Republic and facilitating a regional dialogue for cooperation”.
