Strengthening health, phytosanitary and veterinary safety: towards international standards
Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan – Government of the Kyrgyz Republic and the United Nations Development Programme organized a seminar on strengthening health, phyto-sanitary and veterinary safety, which took place in Bishkek on August 21-22.
Participants of the event discussed the key issues related to formation, development and effective functioning of the country’s sanitary, phytosanitary and veterinary systems with an advanced laboratory and technical, highly professional human resources that operates in accordance with national and international standards.
The focus of the seminar – specific problems associated with the preparation and implementation of activities in the field of sanitary, phytosanitary, veterinary safety, its normative and technical support provided by the "Road Map for the Kyrgyz Republic's accession to the Customs Union."
The participants noted that establishing a modern sanitary, veterinary, phytosanitary system, presence of modern laboratories, checkpoints, capacity building of government employees are an important factors in expanding foreign economic opportunities for the country and its private sector.
The proposed measures will contribute to protection of public health, prevent the spread of infectious diseases, improve food and radiation safety, increase public awareness and reduce corruption.
During the discussions participants developed specific recommendations for improvement of sanitatary, phytosanitary and veterinary systems in the Kyrgyz Republic, which will be financed in accordance with the "Agreement on economic cooperation under the Eurasian Economic Integration" concluded between the governments of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Russian Federation in late May 2014.
Representatives of relevant offices and departments Rospotrebnadzor, Rosselkhoznadzor, the Eurasian Economic Commission, representatives of relevant government agencies of the Kyrgyz Republic: Office of the President, Office of the Government, Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, State Inspectorate for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Safety, Customs Service; representatives of non-governmental organizations, experts.
For information: The seminar was part of the preparatory UNDP project "Technical assistance for improving health, phytosanitary and veterinary safety, including as part of the process of accession of Kyrgyzstan to the Customs Union", implemented in collaboration with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic and Government of the Russian Federation, UNDP in Kyrgyzstan with support of the UNDP Regional Centre in Istanbul and supporting office of UNDP projects in the Russian Federation.
The project aims to provide expertise and technical assistance in preparation (in cooperation with relevant national entities in the Kyrgyz Republic and the Russian Federation) of priority measures, as well as the development of a coherent large-scale project document for the development of sanitary, phytosanitary and veterinary safety, including technical assistance in bringing this system in compliance with the technical and regulatory requirements of the Customs Union, the purchase of equipment for laboratories, equipment checkpoints, personnel training and other necessary measures.
