Disaster Response Coordination Unit takes part in the international simulation exercise “Emergency – 2013”
Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan – As part of the cooperation between Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states on disaster risk management efforts, Tamchy village of Issyk-Kul oblast will host“Emergency-2013” international exercise on management of natural and man-made emergencies. Disaster Response Coordination Unit will take part in this simulation exercise.
"Emergency 2013" will be conducted in three stages and will test the civil protection capacities of the Kyrgyz Republic, SCO member states and international partners to protect the population and territory from consequences of a mountain lake breakout. Participants will also work on rendering aid in emergency situations of natural and man-made disasters in the terrain of Kyrgyzstan.
During the simulation exercise UNDP led Northern Rapid Emergency Assessment And Coordination Team (REACT) will be deployed. Members of Southern REACT, led by the International Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED ) will also participate in the simulation. According to the plan, REACT will assess emergency humanitarian needs in the emergency area submit a report to the DRCU Council.
Based on the report and request of the Government the DRCU Council will prepare a proposal on a coordinated international aid to the affected population.
Representatives of a number of countries and international organizations are invited to be observers of the “Emergency-2013” exercise.
Disaster Response Coordination Unit was established in 2008 to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, the UN country team in Kyrgyzstan, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and other key stakeholders for adequate and effective humanitarian response in emergencies situations.
