UNDP Provides Support in Prevention Disaster Risks in Kyrgyzstan

21 Nov 2011

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan – In 2011 UNDP Disaster Risk Management Programme provided twenty small grants aimed at disaster risk reduction in the most vulnerable communities of Kyrgyzstan.  Total amount of projects, implemented in six provinces of Kyrgyzstan: Batken, Osh, Jalal-Abad, Chui, Issyk-Kul and Naryn is 8.9 million KGS out of which 4.2 million KGS (47 %) is contribution of UNDP.  About 49 thousand people benefited from implementation of these projects.

Local communities, councils, province, district and local level Commissions on Civil Protection participated in planning and implementation of the mitigation projects, which helped to improve interaction between administration level and population.  A number of important activities such as training on planning, implementation of projects, developing  project estimation documents, financial and statistical reports, disaster risk reduction or removing disaster consequences by means of social mobilization and others were implemented on local levels.

For the period of 2006-2009 UNDP Disaster Risk Management Programme implemented 34 mitigation projects which helped to protect 1320 houses (about 6600 people), 23 objects of public infrastructure (schools, hospitals etc.), 1489 hectares farmlands, 33.3 km of communications (roads, channels etc.) from natural hazards.  UNDP contributed 51% of the total cost.

In 2010 UNDP with WFP in cooperation with local authorities implemented 70 public works projects based on Cash-for-work and work-for-food principles.  Total extension of restored and/or constructed linear constructions (irrigation nets, roads, protective dams, embankments and others) reached 255 thousands meters.  The projects helped to construct two pedestrian and restore four automobile bridges.  More than 38 thousand households are estimated to benefit from the projects.
