Batken-2016: inter-ethnic relations shall be strengthened

National Conference “Batken 2016: strengthening inter-ethnic relations and the fight against religious extremism” was held 13 April 2016.

The conference aimed to discuss inter-ethnic concept and adopt of the resolution on its results. The final version of the adopted document will be available for public on Friday, 15 April 2016 through publications and other media.

The conference was organized by Administration of Batken oblast with the financial support of UNDP in Kyrgyz Republic and the OSCE with the participation of State Agency for Local Self-Government and Inter-ethnic Relations (SALSGIR), Representatives of the Government of the KR in all seven oblasts, local self-governments, cultural centers, and representatives of the clergy, law enforcement bodies and international development organizations. Before the conference, the participants visited a trade fair of folk crafts and traditional cooking and a photo exhibition, devoted to the friendship of people, mutual understanding and agreement.

During the conference, the Deputy Director of SALSGIR, Bakhtiar Saliev,
spoke about the concept of strengthening the unity of the people and inter-ethnic relations as a priority measures.

He also presented the interim results of the Centre for monitoring of inter-ethnic relations (the Center), which in addition to the monitoring functions, is engaged in research of inter-ethnic problems. “The Centre regularly monitors the inter-ethnic situation in the 9 multi-ethnic rayons and cities of Osh and Jalal-Abad oblasts. It is expected that this year some of the multi-ethnic districts of Batken oblast will be included to the monitoring list as well” -informed Bakhtiar Saliev.

Aliona Niculita, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic addressed the areas of UNDP cooperation with national partners in strengthening interethnic relations in collaboration with SALSGIR and in strengthening cross-border cooperation with the Republic of Tajikistan. She noted: “The project aimed at strengthening of co-operation between government, law enforcement bodies, youth and women, as well as the improvement of infrastructure in the border villages. This will effectively contribute to resolving disputes over access to natural resources and will provide an opportunity to restore cooperation and good neighborly relations between the neighboring villages of the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan”.

At the end of the event the participants visited the National Park “Aigul-Too” in Kara-Bulak village of Batken oblast, where there was a concert program of the national folklore ensemble of the Batken oblast musical Drama Theater named after A. Zhaynakov.

This year UNDP in the Kyrgyz Republic and in Tajikistan in collaboration with four other UN agencies (World Food Programme (WFP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and UN Women), launched the project “Cross-border Cooperation for Sustainable Peace and Development” at the expense of the Peacebuilding Fund. The project is implemented in the territory of Batken oblast of the Kyrgyz Republic and Sogdiy oblast of the Republic of Tajikistan and aimed at creating favorable conditions for promoting sustainable peace and development in the border regions of the two neighboring states. This is the first project that is implemented in two countries at the same time with the participation of several UN Agencies. It is expected that the experience made in the implementation of this project can be applied in other countries.
