May 2, 2013

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan – UNDP in Kyrgyzstan and the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) signed an agreement for a $12,375,789 grant to combat tuberculosis. The purpose of this grant is to reduce the burden of tuberculosis (TB) in Kyrgyzstan through consolidation, expansion of the directly observed treatment system (DOTS) programme and strengthening of the treatment of drug resistant TB .

The target groups of the programme will include patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis, health workers and the general population. The funding will be used to strengthen programme management, system and human resources, improvement of detection, diagnosis, treatment of drug resistant TB, further integration of the programme for the control of tuberculosis in primary health care facilities and renovation of laboratories.

This is the second phase of the grant for a total amount of $19,357,893 implementation of which started in 2011. The grant will be implemented through contracts with government agencies responsible for combatting TB, as well as through the Grants Implementation Unit of the Global Fund which is managed by UNDP in Kyrgyzstan.

Tuberculosis is a major health problem in Kyrgyzstan, where each year more than 5,000 new cases of the disease are identified. Effective fight against the disease requires universal access to diagnosis and treatment, social care for patients and adequate equipment. This would be impossible without substantial financial support from the government and donors.

One of the most important sources of funding for the programme to control tuberculosis in Kyrgyzstan is the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The guarantor of quality and efficient execution of financing is the UN Development Programme in the Kyrgyz Republic, which has been the principal recipient of the Global Fund grant for tuberculosis since 2011.
